Two Kentucky residents were airlifted from the scene of a crash on northbound I-57 about a mile north of the Kinmundy exit Wednesday afternoon.

State Police say only one vehicle, an SUV, was involved in the crash.  Preliminary information indicates it left the roadway and struck a tree.   Both the driver, an 88-year-old male, and a passenger, an 85-year-old female, were transported by ambulance to South Central High School where a landing zone was set up for two Air Evac helicopters who transported them to regional hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted State Police.   Kinmundy-Alma and Farina Firemen along with United Medical Response assisted in getting the two transported and setting up the landing zone at the high school.

Because the SUV had run off the road, the interstate did not have to be closed.

The crash occurred at 2:01 Wednesday afternoon.
