Summer electric rates for Ameren customers will jump 18 to 22 percent this summer.

The rate increase is the result of the MISO capacity auction that saw higher costs as a result of no surplus capacity.  On the positive side, MISO also did not project a shortage of electricity that could have led to a brown out or blackout situation.   MISO coordinates the electrical grid that serves the area.

Ameren Illinois’ Marcelene Love notes Ameren just passes along the increased rates from the suppliers and is not involved in setting them.  The higher bills will begin with the July billing cycle and continue through October 1st when lower winter rates are expected to go into effect.

Those on electric aggregation will not be impacted by the new summer rates as their rates are set by contracts worked out through different contracts with the energy suppliers.
