Clinton County Sheriff Dan Travous has released additional information about a Friday afternoon crash involving two UTVs and a pickup truck on Drive In Road in rural Breese that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Germantown girl.

Travous says four vehicles left the Breese Central High School Parking lot onto Old US 50 before turning south onto Drive In Road.  He reports approximately a half mile south of the Highline Road, the lead Polaris Ranger UTV started swerving for unknown reasons.  The Honda Pioneer UTV behind it attempted to pass but the Polaris vehicle accelerated making it more difficult for the pass to be completed.  The Pioneer was able to accelerate enough to pull in front of the Ranger on the southbound side of the roadway.  Just before the Pioneer merged back into the southbound side of the roadway, the Ranger braked hard causing a control loss.  As it skidded out of control, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado which was now directly behind the Ranger attempted to avoid a collision and pulled toward the northbound side of the roadway.  After doing so, the pickup sustained damage above the rear passenger side wheel.

The Ranger continued skidding out of control, eventually striking the ditch and ejecting the driver who was killed, 16-year-old Macy Haar of Germantown, onto the road.  A passenger on her UTV, 16-year-old Carly Tassallo of Albers, was injured but has since been released from the hospital.

The Pioneer UTV was operated by 16-year-old Cayden Grayling of Breese.  He had three passengers, 15-year-old Braydn Conrad of Breese, 15-year-old Bryce Albers of Aviston, and Kenneth Thole of Aviston.

The driver of the pickup is identified as 16-year-old Benjamin Malcomb of Albers.

The sheriff says the description of the crash is very basic and preliminary and is based on interviews of eight witnesses.  Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Team will have a much more detailed description of the actual crash in the months to come.

Travous says he’s releasing the preliminary information now to dispel any and all incorrect information currently being disseminated, whether it be in person or on social media.  He also says he hopes Macy’s family remains in your prayers for the foreseeable future.
