Salem City Council approves two downtown Tax Increment Financing projects

Salem Economic Development Director Leah Dellicarpini is pleased to see two downtown buildings purchased with renovation projects in mind.

She presented tax increment financing district ordinances to provide assistance to both in completing renovation work.

“One of our challenges is the downtown buildings are in some disrepair,” Dellicarpini said. “We are very blessed, I think, to have young investors who are willing to take them on, get them shored up and put businesses in them. I’m pretty excited about these projects

The buildings at 207 East Main Street and 210 West Main.

The 207 East Main building is being converted into a medical office for Crea Rose.  It has new electrical and plumbing as well as a new front awning.   It will be ADA accessible.  There is a maximum of $45,000 for TIF eligible projects.

The building at 210 West Main is being purchased by Jered Gambill who plans major renovations including a new roof on the large building that is partially leased by Leon Chapman.   The maximum reimbursement through TIF is $110,000.

The council approved increasing the square of property being leased in the Westside Salem Industrial Park south of the Ameren substation to Mission Salem from 150 to 210 feet. The current space does not provide enough parking area for volunteers and is difficult for trucks to make deliveries.

The city of Salem has changed its Paid Leave Policy to allow new workers to utilize time off after 90 days as now required by state law instead of the 12-month wait that was still in city policy.
