A barn that contained an apartment on the Richard Jones property at 10099 East Richview Road west of Mt. Vernon was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday morning.
Jefferson Fire officials say the 30 by 40 foot pole barn was fully involved in fire upon their arrival after the blaze was spotted by a passerby. The barn was used for storage and had a small apartment in the back for Jones’ son.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Firemen received the call at 9:45 am and were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
The Jones family was not at home at the time. There were no injuries.
Jefferson Fire received mutual aid from Mt. Vernon city, Kell and the Centralia Fire Protection Districts. The Salem and Wayne City Fire Departments stood by at the Jefferson Fire station in the event of another fire.
