The Centralia City Council welcomed Eli Cox as the new recreation coordinator for the city of Centralia at Monday night’s council meeting. Cox, who previously worked for four years at the Clinton County YMCA, began working for the city last week. He says he is excited to take on his new role.

“So far, I’ve been getting my bearings here. It’s been raining a lot lately, but we’re trying to get Rotary Park up and running… It’s awesome going out there and seeing so many people having fun,” Cox said “I really love interacting with the kids and stuff like that. Just going out there and seeing all the families have fun really makes all the hard work worth it.”

The council received an engineering report from Milano and Grunloh Engineers. A boundary survey is underway for sidewalk construction that will be supported by an approved Safe Routes to School grant. The city will be eligible to apply for the grant again this year to support more future construction. The engineers are also working with the city to determine the best way to utilize the $50,000 Lead Service Line Inventory grant that Centralia has been awarded.

The council approved an agreement with Milano and Grunloh to perform engineering services for the Barton Bottoms and Joliff Bridge Road watermain replacement project. Centralia has applied through congressman Mike Bost for $3,153,600 in congressionally directed spending with a 20% local match of $788,400 to fund the replacement of the watermain that services Kaskaskia College and the Centralia Correctional Center.

A perpetual easement was granted to Ameren Illinois along 115 North Oak Street for installation of an underground cable.
