South Central School Superintendent Kerry Herdes is crediting quick action from one of their bus drivers for avoiding any injuries when the bus caught fire on a Thursday morning route.
Herdes says the driver, Tammy Sigrest of Farina, noticed the bus was running hot while traveling Route 185 near Logotee. She turned off the bus and tried restarting it. At that time, steam began covering the windows. Sigrest turned off the bus again and got the seven students on board out of the bus before it went up in flames.
Herdes is appreciative of all the assistance from Farina and St. Peter Firemen, Farina Police, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department as well as parents and some who lived nearby. Some parents took their children to school while another bus was sent to finish the route.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The fire call came in at seven on Thursday morning.
