The Marion County Board has approved an ordinance allowing liquor license holders in rural areas of the county to hold Queen of Hearts drawings for non-profit organizations.

State’s Attorney Tim Hudspeth drew up the ordinance after one of the liquor license holders expressed an interest in holding on the contests that sees a weekly increase in the prize money until the jackpot is won.

The board was told replacement of all the windows in the courthouse and public service building are complete and the new doors have been installed in the public service building.  The sidewalk replacement project on the north side of the courthouse is also completed.  The county will submit expenses for completing the work for reimbursement through the city’s downtown tax increment financing district.   Work on rebuilding the jury box in the large third story courtroom is expected to begin this week.  The work will add space and make the jury box ADA accessible.

The board has decided to keep the Emergency Services and Disaster Agency Coordinator position as part-time.  Coordinator Sheri Barter had believed she had been moved to fulltime when getting a large raise from the board, but after discussion the board voted against making it full time.  Board Chair Steve Whritenour noted that rural counties around the state all have part time coordinators.

Coroner Claude Howell reported he handled 33 deaths in March.  One was accidental with the rest from natural causes.

Whritenour received concurrence from the full board for five appointments to the 708 Mental Health Board.  New members include Lori Demijan, Rob Barton and Nicki Krupp.  Reappointments to the board were Judith Meeks Hakim and David Iossi.

The board reappointed Jeremy Landreth to another three-year term onto the Patoka Fire Protection District board.
