The Indiana Senate has joined the Indiana House in passing a bill to create the ‘Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission’ that would study bringing 33 rural Illinois counties into the state that have voted to secede to get away from the political influence of Chicago. The bill now goes to Indiana Governor Mike Braun to be signed into law.
However, it doesn’t appear the bill will go much further because the commission requires Illinois representatives. A companion bill was introduced in the Illinois House by Representative Brad Halbrook to provide for those representatives who died in the House.
In January, Governor JB Pritzker called it a stunt that was not going to happen. Both the Governors of Illinois and Indiana would have to approve any plan that would also have to receive Congressional approval.
While some in Indiana also see the proposal as a joke and there are more important things for the legislature to deal with, State Senator Scott Baldwin (R-Noblesville) says they are just signaling to those Illinois counties that Indiana is open for business, and we’d be happy to accept them.
Marion, Clinton, Fayette, Jefferson, Clay, and Wayne Counties are among the 33 that overwhelmingly voted in an advisory vote that they would like to leave Illinois.
