Fire heavily damaged the Adedoyo Adenekon home of 109 Country Club in Salem.
The first of two fires broke out at 5:45 Wednesday afternoon. The second fire was reported at 9:25 Wednesday evening.
Salem Fire Chief Jim Cerny says the initial fire spread rapidly.
“The first firefighter that got here reported light smoke showing. Within less than two minutes, it went to dark black, heavy smoke, and a very involved fire.”
Cerny says the occupants took the right action.
“They were home, and they figured out that they had a real problem with the smoke, and they immediately called the fire department and got out,” Cerny said. “That’s what you need to do in a case like this, is get out of the house.”

Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Bill Fulton says it appears the initial fire started in a couch next to three windows. He reports the fire was hot enough to break out the windows, giving the fire oxygen and leading to a flash fire. The fire caused extensive fire damage to parts of the home and water, smoke and heat damage to the rest of the home.
Firemen were called back when flames were seen shooting through parts of the roof of the home. Fulton reports that fire started in one of two rooms that fire did not reach the first time. The State Fire Marshal was on the scene after the second fire, but so far no cause has been determined. Fulton notes they had gone through the home with the thermal imaging camera and determined the fire was out following the first fire.
Odin provided mutual aid assistance on the scene during both fires while Kell Firemen covered the Salem Fire Station.
