The Kaskaskia College Education Center will be closed for the rest of the Spring Semester due to damage from a flash flood during Friday night’s heavy rains.

College President George Evans estimates damage could reach $300,000 to $500,000.

“We were monitoring the flooding last (Friday) night via camera.  We could see water coming in, but there was nothing we could have done last night.   We got there early, we assessed, and brought in Serve Pro.  We made the decision this (Saturday) morning that we are going to have to take center offline, number one to dry the play out,  number two to remove all the installation, repair of the  dry wall, repainting and replacing any equipment that was damaged.”

Evans estimates that about 100 students taking classes at the Salem Education Center will be displaced.

“We will contact the students who are specific to this center and do the best we can to provide them with alternative instructutional avenues so they don’t have any barriers to complete classes this semester.”

Evans says some could be moved to the main campus, finish classes online, or possibly at another location in Salem.

Unlike the first time the Salem Education Center flooded, they have adequate insurance to cover the cost this time, and taxpayers will not be picking up the cost.

Several other businesses to the east of the college in the Westgate Shopping Area also received flood damage and were cleaning up the water and other debris carried into their businesses.
