The Centralia City Council at Monday night’s regular meeting authorized consulting firm Good Energy to seek bids for a new energy supply contract for the city of Centralia. The city’s current contract expires in May. Representatives of Good Energy said that they would likely recommend a two-year contract to lock in energy and capacity, with the goal of protecting against price spikes in a potentially volatile energy market in the near future.

The city held a required public hearing for use of an Illinois Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant to build sidewalks from Jordan School to Edgebrook Lane. City Manager Galen Mahle says the sidewalk will begin to be installed in spring 2026.

A resolution was approved authorizing an automation update project for the SCADA system at the waste water treatment. The system includes a new control panel and computer that will more effectively monitor and respond to conditions in the plant. The estimated cost of the new system is $128,183.

The council approved an ordinance to increase the number of available Class A liquor licenses to accommodate the reopening Centralia House Restaurant and Sporting House. The Centralia House had a liquor license prior to its closure under its old owner. The council also approved a $12,000 facade improvement grant for the restaurant, to cover some of the costs of installation of an awning, paint, windows, exterior repairs, doors, and exterior lighting.

The city recognized the retirement of Centralia Fire Lieutenant John D. Cavaletto after 26 years of service.

Mayor Bryan Kuder issued a proclamation naming Major League Baseball’s opening day as “Gary Gaetti Day,” in honor of Centralia-born ballplayer Gary Gaetti’s athletic achievements. This year’s Gary Gaetti Day falls on March 27.
