The Salem Wildcats baseball team dropped a pair of games at Mountain Dew Park in Marion on Saturday.
They lost a heartbreaker in the final at bat against Goreville. Salem lead 1-0 scoring their lone run in the top of the first inning. Starter Jalen Inlow was great on the mound going 6 innings allowing just 4 hits and 2 runs, neither were earned. He struck out 10. But in the 7th, with the score still 1-0, Goreville would get a base runner and then Rhett Detering would come in throwing 86 miles per hour he would get back to back strikeouts but the final batter put a ball between shortstop and left field that Inlow nearly caught but collided with his teammate and the winning two runs came across.
Salem only had 3 hits in the game. Inlow singled and scored the only Salem run. Rhett Detering drove in the run and Aden Bass had the other 2 hits. In the game Rhett injured his foot and was not able to play the second game against Carterville, a game he was scheduled to pitch.
Salem shorthanded then lost to Carterville 16-1. Keyton Grawe had the only Salem hit. Carter Lowe started for Salem and got relief from Cody Beard, Luke Boldt and Keaton Gullion.
Salem is back in action for the first of 4 straight days with games on Monday when they host Belleville West.
