Salem Mayor Nic Farley says Safe Sheds has approximately 60 storm shelters on their lot at 1003 South Maple and in a storage area along South Broadway near Crescent Bearing that they will make available to those in need of shelter from tonight’s predicted severe weather.
Any shelter with a door handle and an installed emergency escape opening can be used. These shelters are NOT anchored and do not, therefore, meet the standards of a FEMA-compliant storm shelter. Anyone using the shelters should bring their own flashlights and emergency supplies. Instructions for securing the door in the event of severe weather are posted on the interior of the shelter, and the safety bar should be installed as per those instructions.
All shelters are on private property, and anyone coming onto the property is doing so at their own risk. There is not good lighting or a lot of parking in the lot at Safe Sheds, so anyone coming is encouraged to use extreme caution when driving and walking through the lot. And, please, take everything with you when you leave a shelter, because they are all sold to customers across the U.S. who are waiting for them to be delivered.
