The Centralia High School Showcase on Stage will present Matilda the Musical Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16. The title character, played by senior Eliza Glascock, is a smart girl with unique abilities who deals with unloving parents and an unfamiliar boarding school.

Senior Lyra Shook, who plays the role of Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey, says the story is a highlight of the show with both humor and depth.

“Matilda is not wanted, or, she doesn’t feel like she’s loved by her parents,” Shook said. “It’s an important story to show that there are people who find family in unlikely places. The boarding school is a very dark and scary place, but Matilda finds Miss Honey… it’s very important to show that emotional connection between those two characters, because I know many kids who make special connections with their teachers.”

The Showcase has been working on the musical since auditions were held in December. Senior Zachary Detering, who plays the role of Miss Trunchbull, says this is one of the better shows that the high school has put on, and a lot of work has gone into it.

“It’s been very exciting and fun, but it’s been a lot of work. A lot of rehearsals, four days out of the week staying after school. It’s been a lot, but it’s well worth it.”

Glascock noted that a cool new visual feature in this musical is the use of projections. With projection mapping, the crew places images around the stage to build visual effects and set the scene. These effects help to create a viewing experience the CHS stage has never seen before.
