Centralia sophomore Michael Organ hit a three from the top of the key with 3.9 seconds left in a tie ball game lifting the Orphans past East St Louis 46-43 to advance to tomorrow’s Sectional Final. East took a 15-4 lead in the 2nd quarter, but a 21-0 run by the Orphans gave them a 25-15 lead in the 3rd. The Flyers came back and tied it late and had the ball with less than 30 seconds left but stepped out of bounds allowing the Orphans to set up the dramatic finish. Centralia is 29-4 overall and will play Triad tomorrow trying to win their 2nd straight Sectional crown with a trip to the Springfield Super Sectional on the line.
The other Sectional feeding to Springfield is at Decatur Eisenhower. Mt Zion nipped Lincoln 32-30 and will take on Chatham Glenwood tomorrow for a trip to the Supers.
Fearday Breaks Boys Scoring Record In Dawgs Win Over Webber….Flenoid’s Block Leads Meridian Past Waltonville
In 1a at Red Hill, St Anthony’s Brock Fearday scored 29 points as they Bulldogs beat Webber 68-55. The game was close with the Bulldogs leading just 44-40 after three quarters. Also in the win, Fearday passed Mike Wente’s 55 year old boys scoring record at St Anthony. He needed 11 going into the game. Junior scoring sensation Nathaniel Marlow finished with 28. He will have a shot of reaching 3000 points in his career heading into next season. St Anthony advances to tomorrow’s title game against Tuscola.
Antonio Flenoid Jr blocked Gage Peterson’s shot at the buzzer and Mounds Meridian held off Waltonville 54-51 at Cobden. Meridian will face Goreville in tomorrow sectional. The two teams have not seen each other this season. Waltonville’s season ends at 28-5.
Althoff Pulls Away From Vienna To Advance….Next Up, Breese Central
In 2a, Belleville Althoff held off a Vienna rally and pushed past the Eagles 69-52 to advance to the Sectional Finals. The Crusaders improved to 28-5 on the season and got 21 points from Bryden Gryzmala, 16 in the 2nd half. Dierre Hill added 15 and Zach Winkeler added 10. Hunter Webb led Vienna with 18 as the Eagles won their first regional since 2007. Althoff will play Breese Central at Carterville tomorrow for a trip to the Super Sectionals.
Also in 2a at Greenville, Staunton lost to Williamsville 57-35. Warrensburg Latham beat Lawrenceville at Tolono Unity 47-43 to advance to take on TTown tomorrow.
