A 31-year-old Wayne City man was injured in a pickup truck-deer crash on the Route 161 Extension at the Johnson Road intersection southeast of Iuka.
Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says James Burge had just passed another vehicle while westbound at a high rate of speed when he struck the deer. The pickup then left the road, jumped a ditch, traveled through the corner of a field, crossed Johnson Road, went up an embankment, and then through a fence before stopping in a field.
An Air Evac Helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but was cancelled before arrival when Burge’s injuries did not appear severe. Burge refused hospital treatment, but left with a family member who may have taken him for medical treatment.
Cripps says the State’s Attorney will make the decision on any arrests coming out of the incident.
The crash was reported at 9:20 on Friday night.
