The Salem Wildcats season came to an end as they lost at Carbondale in their 3a regional quarterfinal 24-43. Salem only managed 7 total field goals in the game and only 2 after halftime. They committed 12 turnovers in the game. Noah Nix led Salem with 12 as he is one of four seniors that will be graduating along with Ayden Rose, Miking Ettress and Braden Rector. Salem only trailed 16-13 at the halftime break, but was outscored 27-11 in the second half. Salem was 10-15 from the foul line. Salem’s season ends at 7-23. Carbondale improves to 11-18 and will play in Wednesday’s first semifinal in Carbondale against South 7 rival Mt Vernon. Olney and Marion will play tomorrow in the other semi.
Also last night, Charleston beat Effingham 49-36 and will advance to the Effingham semifinals tomorrow where they will get Lee Bennett and the Centralia Orphans. Also last night, Cahokia eliminated Freeburg 64-51.
In 1a, the South Central Cougars trailed at home to St Elmo/Brownstown 22-15, but turned it around outscoring the Eagles 25-7 in the second half to advance 40-29. Callaway Smith had 10 to lead SC, Kage Hiestand added 9 and Brody Markley 8. SC will take on Dieterich in Farina tomorrow in a semifinal matchup.
Playing their final game in their gym before moving to their new home next year, the North Clay Cardinals beat Mulberry Grove 77-34. The 77 points matching the number of years the Cardinals have played in that gym.
Also in 1a basketball, Patoka/Odin’s season came to an end losing at Altamont 66-32. Christ Our Rock opened up with a 56-45 win over Wayne City. Sandoval lost on the road at top-seed Dieterich 89-40 and St Anthony dominated Ramsey to the tune of a 102-16 final.
8th seed Wesclin upset 5th seed Carlyle 70-50 in the quarterfinals of the Carlyle 2a Regional. Sophomore Gavin Rahm had a career high 37 points, 22 in the first half, for Wesclin. Owen Szpila added 11 and Bryce Haar 10. Zack Persin led the Indians with 12 and Matthew Guthrie added 10. Wesclin will take on 3rd seed Columbia on Wednesday at 8pm. Following the first game of the night featuring Breese Central and Nashville after the Hornets beat Mater Dei last night.
In 2a, Roxana won their opener holding off Virden North Mac 51-47, Flora beat Vandalia on the road 52-46.
