A 30 by 40-foot wooden barn believed to date back to the 1800s was destroyed in an early Sunday morning fire.
Jefferson Fire officials say the fire was on the Bernard Morris property at 17,922 East Liberty Road. Morris’ son first saw the fire after it had already engulfed the barn. The roof was already falling in when firemen were first arriving on the scene.
The barn and all its contents are considered a total loss. Items in the barn included a tractor, side-by-side, a riding lawn mower, and a number of older vehicles. While the cause of the fire has not been determined, it is believed to be electrical in nature.
Jefferson Fire called Mt. Vernon City, Bluford, Wayne City, and Ewing to the scene for mutual aid. Benton and Woodlawn covered the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.
The fire call came in at 12:40 on Sunday morning. Firemen were on the scene until around 3:30 Sunday morning.
