Winter Weather Advisory continues, more snow after nine Tuesday night

By Bruce Kropp Feb 18, 2025 | 5:25 PM

The National Weather Service says one to three more inches of snow is possible across South Central Illinois, South Western Illinois, and Southeast Missouri when the snow ends on Wednesday.   The most likely amount of additional snow in most of Marion County is one to two inches.  One inch of snow was on the ground at the Salem Water Plant at seven Tuesday morning and a half inch at the Centralia Water Treatment Plant.

Heavier snow is expected to resume after nine Tuesday night and continue until four Wednesday morning.   Some lingering snow is in the forecast for Wednesday.

Travel could become difficult.

As of five, the Illinois Department of Transportation reports I-57 and I-64 are mostly clear as are major highways in the region except Fayette and Clay County which still have scattered slick spots.  Marion County’s secondary and rural roads are mostly clear with scattered slippery spots.

Three minor accidents were blamed on slick road conditions this morning.  Salem Police handled a two-car crash on West Main near the Wendy’s Restaurant and a one-vehicle crash on North Broadway near the Medicine Shoppe where a vehicle hit a pole.  The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reported one crash when a car slid off the Green Street Road near Brewery Hill Road and hit a guardrail.

Salem has its snow route ordinance in effect until further notice.  Centralia’s snow route emergency begins at eight Tuesday morning and continues until eight Thursday morning.  Central City’s snow route ordinance is in effect until six Friday evening.  You are not allowed to park on designated snow routes when the snow route ordinances are in effect to allow crews to better clear streets.
