The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees voted Monday night to change the name of one of the college’s facilities to better reflect its role in preparing students for the workforce.

Trustees approved a motion to change the name of the Harry L. Crisp Technology Center to the Harry L. Crisp Manufacturing and Trades Center. KC presents a variety of programming at the facility on the east side of Centralia, including industrial technology, manufacturing technology, HVAC, carpentry, and welding, and College President George Evans says the new name will help clarify the training that takes place there.

“When you think the original name associated with technology, there’s just some confusion and misinformation, that it’s a data center or we’re teaching computer information technology out there when … that original intent for the building was to focus on the vocational trades, which we do well and we want to make sure that we use this opportunity to draw attention just to how successful we have been out there, not only training these individuals but with our relationships with a lot of the local unions.”

The name change is effective immediately, though Evans notes that some signage will need to be updated, and KC must formally inform the Illinois Community College Board of the change.

In other action on Monday, the board approved a bid of $55,705 from Martin Roofing & Solar of Mascoutah for the emergency replacement of a section of the roof at the Trenton Education Center.

Trustees also accepted the resignation of Title III Director Tabitha Welch and police officer Robert Thompson, and approved the employment of Shannon Harris as a building and grounds technician.
