A large horse barn on the Fred Cole property on Wisher Road in rural Patoka was damaged by fire Wednesday morning.
While Patoka Fire Chief Blake Hyde says with the help of the owner and employees most of the fire was knocked down on their arrival, but four or five horses were being treated for breathing in a large amount of smoke. In all the barn held 25 horses.
Hyde says the fire appears to have started in a heater that was part of a watering tank system. The tanks melted to the ground, even though they were full of water. That part of the fire put itself out, but not before it spread to a large hay bale which produced a large amount of smoke. The bale was pulled outside the barn by employees.
Upon arrival, Hyde says there was just light smoke remaining and they checked to make sure there were no other extension to the fire.
Sandoval responded on mutual. Since the fire was under control on arrival, Odin was canceled enroute.
The fire call came in at 7:22 Wednesday morning. Firemen remained on the scene until about nine am.
