The Salem Wildcats battled with Breese for 2 quarters with the game tied at 10 after the first and Salem only trailing 21-17 at the halftime break. But the Cougars used a 15-4 3rd quarter and 27-10 second half to pull away and win 48-27 to improve to 14-4 and 6-0 in the Cahokia Conference. Salem falls to 4-14 and 1-5 in the league. Noah Nix and Ayden Rose led Salem with 6 points each. Griffin Becker finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars. Easton Becker added 12.
Salem lost the JV game 57-36. Landen Maxey led Salem with 9 and Avery Gullion added 7. The Wildcats are off until Thursday when they open the SIT against 2nd seed Mt Vernon.
While Salem was losing on one end of Breese, the other side of town saw a jam packed Mater Dei High hosting St Anthony. The Bulldogs won the nip and tuck game 45-39.
The Salem fresh/soph will host Patoka/Odin at 10am.
AJ Keith was too much and the Pinckneyville defense handled Docker Tedeschi and the Benton Rangers, handing them their first loss of the year 51-36 and avenging their loss at the Duster Thomas championship.
The SC Cougars fell to Dieterich in a tight NTC contest 34-30. Mt Vernon needed double overtime to beat visiting Carbondale 54-51. The Rams will travel to O’Fallon tonight.
Also last night, TTown traveled to Tuscola and knocked off the #8 team in 1a 32-31. TTown is 12-5 and will host Warrensburg Latham tonight before opening up the SIT next week.
After last night there are only 5 undefeated teams left in the state. Waubonsie Valley in 4a, Bismarck Henning and Rockford Christian in 2a and Pecatonica and Waltonville in 1a.
