Mt. Vernon City Firefighters say there were no injuries in two-weekend fires that heavily damaged two homes.

A neighbor spotted flames coming through the roof of a neighbor’s home early Sunday morning and was able to wake up the occupants so they could escape without injury.   The fire was at the Brett Bryant home at 704 North 8th Street.   Firemen say the home was fully involved upon arrival and they were hampered by the snowstorm that was underway.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid at the scene.  Kell and Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in the event of another fire.  Hamilton County Fire was called for rehab due to the weather.

Firemen received the call at 6:35 Sunday morning and were on the scene for nearly five hours.

Late Saturday night, Mt. Vernon Firemen were called to a home at 8019 North Fourth.  While no one was supposed to be living in the home, firemen were told squatters had been staying at the residence.  Flames were shooting from the single-story upon the fire department’s arrival.  Heavy damage was reported.   The fire call came in at 11:16 Saturday night with firemen on the scene until 1:30 Sunday morning.
