The Illinois Department of Transportation reports just a few slick spots remain on the roads across Marion, Clinton, Jefferson, Washington, Clay, and Wayne Counties.  There are more areas of snow cover on major roads in Fayette County and roads in Jefferson County south are now reported free of snow and ice.

If you’re traveling I-57, you’ll find some slick spots from Marion County to Champaign.   The Interstate is reported clear north of Champaign.  I-64 has some scattered slippery spots in the Metro East and Washington County but is clear from the Jefferson County line to Indiana.  There are still slick areas along I-70 from St. Louis to the Indiana border.

Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says while major highways are mostly clear, secondary roads mostly are a cover of ice and caution is needed.  He suspects many of the roads will be more slick than on Monday.

Salem Public Works Director Travis Sanders says all streets have been plowed, but are still packed with snow.  He expects they will be more slick to travel on Tuesday due to the refreeze with colder temperatures.  Sanders says they will continue to work on the snow cover if temperatures once again rise but that doesn’t look promising with the weather forecast the next few days.

Most Centralia streets still have a snow/ice cover.

Salem Township Road Commissioner Joe Telford says all township roads are passable, but still ice and snow covered.  Nation Road, Cross Road (east and west), Mills Cart, and Boone Street are prone to drifting so use caution. Telford warned it’s very difficult to tell the road from the ditch at night if the ditches are full of snow up to the level of the road.

Just a trace of additional snow on Monday.  Six inches of snow still reported on the ground at the Salem Water Treatment Plant.  Five and a half inches of snow remains on the ground at the Centralia Water Treatment Plant.
