South Central Illinois is in a transition zone between heavy snow and heavy freezing rain on Sunday. The forecast currently projects between 3 to 8 inches of snow and ice accumulations around two-tenths of an inch. A winter storm warning goes into effect at ten Saturday night and continues until six Monday morning.
It will look quite different in Central Illinois and areas to the south. Snowfall up to 18 inches is forecast in parts of Central Illinois while more than six-tenths of an inch of ice are possible across a band of Southern Illinois.
The latest forecast indicates snow is like before five Sunday morning, then snow will become mixed with sleet. The low will drop to around 24 degrees. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half-inch possible.
On Sunday, snow and sleet is expected before 3pm, then snow, freezing rain, and sleet. The sleet could be heavy at times. High near 27. Northeast wind 10 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
On Sunday night, Snow, freezing rain, and sleet, becoming all snow after 3am. Low around 22. Northeast wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
The show exits on Monday before noon. Winds will still be an issue. They will be out of the north 11 to 17 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 26.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.
