A 48-year-old Salem woman faces two counts of aggravated battery for allegedly hitting a Salem man in the arm and body with an altered bat.
Dee Schwarm of North Trenary was arrested at her home on December 27th after Salem Police investigated the case after the alleged victim showed up at Salem Township Hospital for treatment.
Police reports in the probable cause statement said the victim did not want police involved and didn’t know who attacked him. He had a difficult time communicating due to multiple head injuries, a large gash on his chin, and from wearing a neck brace. The hospital staff also indicated the victim had fractures to both his right and left arms and a possible skull fracture. He was later transferred to an Evansville, Indiana hospital.
Police reports say the next day the victim wanted to talk to police and provided more information. He indicated Schwarm came into his home while he was asleep, got the bat from a closet, and began hitting him. The victim remembered being hit at least six or seven times. After leaving, Schwarm reportedly returned and began hitting the alleged victim again and threatening to kill him.
After the victim’s roommate woke up, he grabbed the bat and took the alleged victim to the hospital.
When interviewed by police, Schwarm denied beating the man with a bat.
Schwarm had a public defender appointed to represent him. Judge Mark Stedelin denied the request of prosecutors to hold Schwarm without bond. She was then released on pre-trial conditions until a February 11th preliminary hearing.
