One person was injured Friday afternoon when two semi-trucks collided on I-57 southbound about three miles south of the US 50 exit at Salem.

While State Police reports do not yet indicate a cause, initial information from the scene indicated that the crash started with a car brake checking.  To avoid hitting the car, one of the semi trucks swerved and struck the rear of the second semi causing very minor damage.  The truck that swerved then jackknifed and left the roadway before coming to a stop in the median.  A load of large timber blocks came loose destroying the cab and scattering the timber in the passing lane.

The driver of the truck hauling the timber was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

All southbound lanes were initially closed after the crash at 1:05 pm.  State Police say within a short time, traffic was able to use the right lane.  The second lane reopened at about 2:30 pm.
