The Salem Grade School Board has hired a new Assistant Principal for Franklin Park Middle School.

Current fifth grade social studies teacher Ben Teriet was selected from the multiple candidates who applied.   He has taught six years at Franklin Park and five years in the Mt. Vernon City Grade School Board that.   Teriet explained his desire to join the administrative team.

“One of the reasons is just supporting the students to change lives, build relationships, and as an administrator, have more opportunity to help teachers reach their full potential,” Teriet said. “In turn, that would help the students as well to reach their full learning potential.”

Teriet will begin his new position on July 1st.  He replaces Marita Williams who transferred to the Assistant Principal position at Hawthorn Grade School.

The Salem Grade School Board approved its annual tax levy.  It is 4.9-percent over what was collected in property taxes this year.  Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says if they receive the full amount, it will give the district $120,000 in new revenue.   The school’s tax rate is expected to stay the same at $2.25 or go up about a penny as a result of growing assessed valuation.

Franklin Park Principal Tyler Lux reported US News and World Report has named Franklin Park the 38th best Middle School in the country.   Lux says the magazine judged by a number of criteria.

The board accepted the resignation of Amber Metcalf as a paraprofessional.

The meeting began with a performance of the Franklin Park band and chorus singing Christmas Carols.
