At the end of Tuesday night’s Centralia grade school board meeting, superintendent Craig Clark received permission from the board to submit a letter to the city of Centralia requesting that the portion of south Pine Street where students are dropped off in front of Centralia Junior High School be made a northbound one-way. Clark says this change could address growing concerns about safety during student drop-off and pick-up.
“We’ve had some concern with the safety of our students, with parents dropping off and picking up kids and making sure that they can do that safely without getting hit,” Clark said. “With the street as a one-way, all of the kids would be getting out of the cars on the same side and all the traffic would be moving in the same direction. I think that would be a huge win for us in safety for our kids.”
Clark said that having cars going northbound and southbound while students try to cross the street creates a dangerous situation even with staff working to control traffic. No members of the board objected to the letter.
