The City of Salem Recreation Department kicked off the Christmas with a variety of activities capped by the arrival of Santa Claus on Sweney Corner Saturday afternoon.

Santa stepped out of a Salem Fire Protection District truck to more than 100 kids who had gathered to greet him.

Recreation Director Jed Casburn was excited about the turnout.

“We are excited Santa has finally arrived here in Salem,” Casburn said. “I think everybody had a good time watching classic movies today. It’s been a   really good day.”

Kids had a chance to have their picture taken with Santa and pick out a present from the sleigh.   There was free hot chololate and cookies for kids and adults alike.

The Christmas weekend began with a free carnival for kids at the Salem Community Activity Center on Friday night.  An estimated 250 participated in free games set up by businesses and community organizations.
