A vacant home undergoing renovation in Mt. Vernon was damaged by fire this (Tuesday) morning.

Heavy fire was showing from one side of the home on Oakland Avenue as firemen arrived on the scene.  Assistant Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Bryan Jennings says the fire had gutted one room and had burned through the basement floor upon their arrival.  The fire was also going up the wall into the second story of the home.

Jennings reports a quick knockdown.  The fire also caused smoke and heat damage throughout the residence.

The State Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the cause.

The ownership of the home was not immediately available.

The fire call came in at 4:52 Tuesday morning, with firemen on the scene until 7:25 am.
