Marion County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Miller has announced 8,275 Change of Assessment Notices were mailed out on Wednesday.   The notices are going out to owners whose property values have been changed resulting in an increase or decrease in value.

Those wishing to come before the Board of Review for the purpose of contesting the valuation of their property may come to the Supervisor of Assessments Office in the Marion County Courthouse, 100 E. Main St, Salem, lL or e-mail saoffice@marionco.illinois.gov and request a complaint packet. Packets are available beginning Wednesday November 27th and must be completed and arrive in the Supervisor of Assessments Office no later than 4pm on Wednesday, December 27th. You may include your evidence with your complaint packet or bring it to your hearing. Detailed information about the Board of Review process is contained in your complaint packet.

When considering whether to file a complaint, look at your 2024 Fair Market Value and ask yourself if you would sell your home for this value or higher. lf you truly believe you could not, then you may want to come before the Board of Review.

Miller confirms home sale prices are still on the rise and are even higher for similar properties than last year.   The driving force continues to be the lack of homes for sate combined with the overabundance of buyers who are desperate to purchase a home after waiting several years for prices to come down.

ln order to comply with the State requirement for the overall assessment level to be 33.33 percent of Fair market value, a 7 percent multiplier must be added to all applicable property. Miller explains “Last year the multiplier was 10 percent and as Miller stated then, the actual increase in property tax would be far less than 10-percent, which proved to be true. Any increase in taxes was not due to the multiplier, but instead due to an increase in a taxing district’s Levy. If no taxing district increases its levy, a multiplier will NOT increase taxes.”
