Salem Police and the Illinois State Fire Marshals office is investigating a suspicious fire that heavily damaged a mobile home during the noon hour Monday at 19 Starlight Mobile Home Park.
Salem Fire Protection District Chief Jim Cerny was first on the scene.
“When we pulled up, we had flames rolling out through some windows that were broken, and heavy black smoke,” Cerny said. “We didn’t know whether there was anyone inside, but it turned out there was no one inside. As soon as we got some guys here, we got a hose line on it and got it knocked down. The mobile home has quite a bit of damage, but I believe it was going to be scrapped out anyway.”
The occupant Michelle Hester was moving out and no furnishings were left in the home. Several seen running from the home were later questioned by when returning to the area. No arrests have been made.
