Central City to seek $1-million drainage improvement grant

The Central City Village Board took action Tuesday night toward a significant project aimed at improving the village’s drainage system. Board members approved a motion to pay for engineering fees to complete a study needed in order to submit an application for a Community Development Block Grant.

Village officials say the $1 million grant is being sought for a project that would update various storm drains and culverts to improve water flow throughout the community. Officials anticipate the grant funds would cover the cost of the project, which is contingent upon the grant application being approved.

The board also approved an agreement Central City reached earlier this year with the company SBA regarding village-owned property on which SBA maintains a cellular tower. Board members also agreed Tuesday to use a portion of the $145,000 lump sum from SBA to pay off a backhoe the village had purchased.

The board approved a request from Police Chief Jamie Ramsey to create an additional evidence room for the police department inside the village garage.

In other action, the board voted to accept an economic development loan application from Mike Atchison, who is planning to open a bar and grill-style restaurant in the village. Atchison is seeking $125,000 in assistance in his application.

The board also voted to schedule trick-or-treat hours in the village for 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, October 25.
