The Salem Community High School is hosting its second annual Career Fair next Wednesday October 30th. The career fair is expected to have over 40 businesses represented. One of the key coordinators for the event, Kyla Motch, believes the fair is an excellent opportunity for the students.

“When you grow up in Salem, you see the different businesses that are around on a daily basis, but you might not know what all that business does,” Motch said. “I think when you go and visit those booths they have a vast list of everything that they do, all the jobs that they encompass, and I think students being able to learn about what’s inside the walls of businesses that they’ve seen is really important. There’s so much opportunity in Salem and in the county that you don’t always have to leave and go get a job somewhere else. There’s a lot of things you can do here and be successful.”

This year sophomores as well as Junior and seniors will be cycled through the fair. Other schools in Marion County will also be participating at select times. Motch says the career fair provides opportunities to future co-op students.

“We have a student now that is doing co-op, and he met his job for co-op last year at the career fair, so I feel like it was a nice connection made.”

Not only is the fair an opportunity for students, but it is an opportunity for businesses and staff to learn more as well.

“I kind of get to mingle with some business owners, people I otherwise wouldn’t get to know,” Motch said. “I think it’s also good because, with my job here as a counselor, I help students with their career paths whatever they may be. Maybe they want to go to college, straight into the workforce, into the military. Whatever it is they want to do, this allows me to make some more connections and have some more information on a daily basis for the students, which is ultimately who it’s all about.”

A pamphlet with a QR code has been sent out for local business’s wanting to sign up. For businesses who have not received a pamphlet. You can contact Motch at (618) 548-0727 to receive further information.
