Wildcats Honor 100 Years Of Football, Fall To Freeburg

The Salem Wildcats honored 100 years of Wildcats football at halftime last night before falling to Freeburg 33-7.  Salem and the Midgets were in a scoreless battle with about 3 minutes left in the 2nd quarter when the Midgets  would score 3 times in that time frame and lead at the halftime break 20-0.  The Cats only touchdown would come on a 79 yard touchdown reception from Miking Ettress, it was his only catch of the night.  On the ground, Trey Clark rushed 9 times for 29 yards as Salem only had 67 yards on the ground.  The Cats are 1-7 on the season and will finish up their season next week at home against Charleston as Salem will honor their Seniors.  The Trojans will not have a chance at the playoffs either after falling to 3-5 with a loss at Taylorville last night 35-23.

Also in the conference, top ranked Breese Central finished league play undefeated with their 31-0 win over Columbia.  Roxana beat Wood River to finish 2nd 27-8.

Also last night, Carlyle came back to beat Wesclin 28-23, East St Louis won a close battle with Edwardsville to stay undefeated 14-7, Johnston City handed Sesser Valier their first loss of the year 50-30.  In the Little Illini Showdown between two undefeated, state-ranked teams it was Olney beating Casey Westfield 35-20, Vandalia beat Gillespie 56-7.

Today in prep football, Belleville West will play Belleville East in the Southwestern Conference.  Also today, Alton Marquette travels to Dwight Gardner/Wilmington.
