A 44-year-old Iuka man has been charged in Clay County Court at Louisville with reckless homicide following a three-vehicle crash at US50 and the Xenia-Iola Road earlier this month.

Clay County State’s Attorney Phillip Givens says William Shufeldt was taken into custody on Thursday on the Class Three felony charge.  He said the charge is the result of an ongoing investigation of the crash.

The crash took the life of 59-year-old Mia Daniels of Monticello, Arkansas.

Illinois State Police earlier said Shufeldt was attempting to pass other vehicles including a semi while eastbound on US 50 and struck the Daniels vehicle head-on.  Shufeldt was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. He was ticketed for improper overtaking on the left.

The truck driver was not injured.

The Clay County State’s Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Illinois State Police for their investigation.
