The Village of Alma has named its ball field ‘Steve Wilkins Memorial Field.’
Mayor Russell Swift read the proclamation before the sign was unveiled from behind a large plastic tarp.
Swift gives credit to ‘Wilk’ for raising about $80,000 in funds.
“He was from Alma, and he enjoyed this park,” Swift said. “Steve was our liaison to the Kinmundy Methodist Church. Among other fundraisers, Steve went out and raised all the funds to help us get it put back together.”
The final $10,000 came from a donation that was set up for the Alma ball diamond at his funeral. Swift says a lot has been accomplished.
“New LED lights, all-new dirt on the field. We’re still in progress, we redid the concession building. In the future there’ll be trees down the highway, a lot more to come with new playground equipment.”
A large group of Wilkins’ friends, family, and village officials were on hand for the unveiling. Several family members thanked those responsible, but noted ‘Wilk’ would not have been happy with the naming as he tried to quietly go about his work in helping others.
