The Wamac City Council, during its meeting Monday evening, approved an ordinance pertaining to the city’s purchase of property located at 324 Kroger Street. City Clerk Marion Suhl announced that the city would be closing on the property on Tuesday. Wamac officials said there was a house located on the property at one time, but that structure was destroyed in a fire. The city obtained the site through a bidding process, at a total cost of $1,200.
The city council also approved a motion to make a $500 sponsorship donation to the Centralia Halloween Parade, which will take place on Saturday, October 26. Suhl, Mayor Jackie “Butch” Mathus, Treasurer Elisabeth Jackson and city aldermen each contributed to the donation. The council also voted to set trick-or-treat hours in Wamac for 6 to 8 p.m. on the evening of Friday, October 25.
At the request of Police Chief Steve Prather, the council approved the elevation of Officer Jordan Claar to the rank of sergeant with the Wamac Police Department. The promotion will come with a one dollar per hour pay increase. Prather commended Claar for his administrative work as well as his efforts working with the local schools.
Council members also approved the purchase of a computer system for one of the police department’s squad cars, at a cost of $5,291.
Mayor Mathus thanked all those involved in organizing the recent Wamac Fest, which took place at Wamac City Park in September. It was also announced on Monday that the city clerk’s office would be closed the week of October 21 through 25.
