The Salem City Council Monday night approved spending up to $300,000 for emergency repairs to the sewer line on West Warmouth between College and Ohio.

City Manager Annette Sola explained what happened to the sewer line.

“We had a contractor trying to do a tap for a new sewer line,” Sola said. “In that process, we had a line that was collapsed. When he got in to actually make the tie in, we dug for several feet, and it took quite a bit of time before we could find a good spot to stop. At that point in time, we ran a camera in the line and determined that there are several areas in the line, it’s an old concrete pipe, and it has collapsed.”

Haire Plumbing and Heating will do the work.  They just completed replacement of a sewer line on Illinois and Spruce Street.  Sola is pleased with how the project turned out and reminded residents the pavement will remain rough to allow settling over the winter months before the streets are repaved in the spring.   She reports the same process will be used with Warmouth Street to also be repaved in the area of the sewer replacement in the spring.
