Four area fire departments were called to Continental Tire on the south side of Mt. Vernon early Sunday morning when a dryer dust collection system on the roof caught fire.

Jefferson Fire officials say the fire was confined to the dryer, which is part of the curing department, where rubber is melted during the tire-making process.

Jefferson Fire was joined on the scene by Mt. Vernon City, Bluford, and Waltonville Firemen while Kell and Centralia Fire Protection District stood by at the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.

The fire call came in at 5:36 Sunday morning.  Firemen were on the scene until around 7:15 am.
