A fallen tree crushes a car in Centralia.

One car was destroyed and another damaged when a 20 foot tall tree uprooted during a strong wind gust in Centralia from the remnants of Hurricane Helene.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of Jackson Avenue on the city’s northeast side Friday morning.   There were no injuries.

Centralia City Firemen say an Audi owned by Kathleen McCown was crushed and a second vehicle owned by Thetis Johnson was damaged.   Both lived in the immediate area.

The tree also hit an Ameren Illinois electric line guy wire, causing a power pole to snap and a transformer and light to fall to the ground.   The line involved served three homes.

Fire officials say neighbors reported a strong gust of wind at the time the tree fell.

The fire department had responded in case of a fire and city crews responded to clear the road after Ameren crews shut off the electricity.
