The Sandoval Village Board Tuesday night unanimously approved keeping the one percent sales tax on groceries that is being dropped by the state beginning in 2026. Governor JB Pritzker said the tax was regressive and hurts low income residents when signing legislation to eliminate the collection at the statewide level. However, the legislation allowed local governments to adopt the tax levy on their own. Sandoval Village Administrator LeAnn Spiecer says the money now passed along to local units of government from the tax is needed to continue local services.
The village board approved spending $3,008 to complete the replacement of Christmas decorations on power poles in the community. Five additional decorations will be purchased. The village board is also looking for a 20 foot Christmas tree to display between the library and village hall during the Christmas season. Spiecer sees the tree being the focal point of several Christmas activities.
The board agreed to spend just over $10,000 to have the Illinois Rural Water Association provide GPS location of water and sewer lines. Spiecer says it will also allow notes to be added about the lines which will allow the village to be able to record the knowledge of Public Works Director Phil Milano who will be retiring in a few years.
