Salem Economic Development Director Lea Dellicarpini says work on the first phase of lights to line the top of buildings in downtown Salem is scheduled to begin this week.

Dellicarpini says three blocks of lighting will be done in the first year of the three-year project.

“It’s going to be three blocks to start. It’s going to be the northwest and southwest blocks of Broadway and Main, and then the southeast block of Broadway and Main,” Dellicarpini said. “We’re getting some Christmas lights in as well and those will go on the courthouse lawn. All that is done in an effort to make our downtown more charming and appealing and increase tourism. That project is being funded by tourism dollars.”

Dellicarpini says special treatment is planned for the city hall and Salem Travel buildings at Main and Broadway.

“Those buildings are kind of hard to light, to run the lights across the top,” Dellicarpini said. “We’re probably going to take some stable lights and project them up on some of the columns or corner of the building. I think it’ll look pretty neat.”

Dellicarpini says $100,000 is available each of the next three years to complete the project.
