The Salem Wildcats battled, but could not overcome a huge night from wide out Jacob Harvey and quarterback Keller Stocks as visiting Mt Zion left Jim Finks Field with a 34-14 victory. Salem took the opening kickoff and used 10:30 of the clock to drive all the way down and cap it off with a touchdown. The Braves high powered offense wouldn’t get many chances in the first half, but what chances they had they took advantage of. With 90s left in the half, the Braves only had run 6 plays, 3 of them went for long touchdowns as they led 21-14 at the halftime break. The Braves added a pair of 2nd half scores to pull away and improve to 2-1 on the year, while Salem falls to 0-3.
For the Braves, Harvey finished with 5 catches for 211 yards and 4 touchdowns. Quarterback Keller Stocks had a huge night going 10-of-18 threw the air for 298 yards with 5 touchdowns and one interception.
For the Cats, they were led by tailback Angel Salgado. He rushed 16 times for 129 yards and a score playing in place of injured starter Trey Clark, who missed his 2nd straight game with a leg injury. Caeden Bevolo went 11-of-19 for 82 yards and a touchdown pass to Marquis Ettress from 14 yards out. Ettress ended with 4 catches for 40 yards. Freshman Kyler King rushed 11 times for 69 yards.
Also around the Cahokia, Breese Central routed Red Bud 48-21, Chester beat Freeburg 31-14, Columbia over Taylorville 35-27, Wood River got their first win in 2 years beating Marquette 24-7, Roxana beat Civic Memorial 51-12.
The Centralia Orphans lost their 2nd straight heartbreaker, falling at Waterloo 27-26. The game was 14-13 Waterloo at the half in a game that was delayed due to lightning and then torrential rain before being able to finish it up.
