The Salem Historical Commission’s annual Tales from East Lawn program features local actors portraying real people from Salem’s history, most of whom are now buried at the East lawn cemetery. Among the 8 people represented this year are Levi Kagy, a local attorney who was also a commissioner on the Panama Canal project, and his wife Emily. Also featured are Edith Kell, for whom a park in Salem is named, Mary Lemen, who started a college in Salem, oil men Harry Temple Jr. and John Young, and pilot Phil Leckrone.
Luke Purcell of the Salem Historical Commission says the event has grown in popularity over time and brings something new every year.
“We’ve gotten more and more interest every year, and tickets sell out very quickly,” Purcell said. “We have featured different people each year, tried to keep a different theme each year, and always been respectful of the people at the cemetery.”
