UPDATE – One sister killed, two others injured when Amish buggy hit by car in Jefferson County

Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse says one sister was killed and two others airlifted to a St. Louis Hospital after the Amish buggy they were riding collided early Monday evening with a car on Log Cabin Lane north of Goshen Road in rural Opdyke.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies say yesterday at approximately 4:49pm on Log Cabin Lane and Goshen Road in Jefferson County, IL, they  responded to a report of a vehicle and horse drawn buggy crash on Log Cabin Lane and Goshen Road in Jefferson County, IL. Deputies arrived on scene and were assisted by Jefferson County Fire Protection District and Litton Ambulance. It was learned a white Dodge van, driven by 32-year-old Katlyn M. Catron of Ina, IL struck the horse drawn buggy, driven by 20-year-old Dena M. Mast of Belle Rive, IL, from behind, causing major damage and seriously injuring Dena and her two passengers, 18-year-old Elma Mast and 21-year-old Mary M. Mast of Belle Rive, IL.

Elma Mast was rushed to SSM Good Samaritan Hospital by Litton Ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Mary and Dena were flown to a hospital in St. Louis, MO for treatment of their injuries. Catron and her juvenile passenger were not seriously injured in the crash. Family of the Masts arrived on scene to assist with recovery and treatment of the horse, which was also injured during the crash.

Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to assist with the crash investigation. The circumstances are still being investigated. The Sheriff and his staff send their deepest condolences to the Mast family during this time of tragedy.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department called in a State Police Accident Reconstructionist to try and determine how the crash occurred.  It was first reported at five Monday evening.
