Salem Police and Fire worked to free a boy who had become stuck in the spillway portion of the Salem Reservoir six to eight feet below Spillway Road early Saturday night.

Salem Police say the 12-year-old Salem boy had been fishing with friends and was walking into the area where water from the lake moves into the spillway area.  The current apparently caused him to lose his footing and became stuck where he couldn’t move.

His friends called for help.  Salem Police were able to throw a rope to firemen who were able to get the boy to wrap it around himself so they could pull him up onto a concrete platform that is part of the spillway structure.  A ladder was then lowered so the boy could climb out.

Once he was out of the spillway structure, he was taken to a United Medical Response ambulance where he was checked and treated for minor scrapes from the ordeal.  The boy did not require hospital treatment.

The incident unfolded around six Saturday night.
