The Salem Fire Protection District will remember 9-11 with a Memorial Walk, Memorial Service and afternoon activities in Bryan Memorial Park on Saturday.
Firefighter Sarah Dice is helping to coordinate the program which begins at 8:45 with a Memorial Walk on Richter Drive south of the Band Stage.
“It is the distance of both towers put together. One tower was about a quarter of a mile, so both together is half a mile,” Dice said. “It’s just a way to put in a bit of effort that signifies, hey, these guys had to go up to this floor or this floor, and this is the distance if they had made it up to the top floor of both buildings… It’s just something where people can put a little bit of effort in and memorialize that kind of sacrifice that they made.”
Dice says the public is welcome to join the walk. Registration can be made at SFPD Walk to Remember 9/11 on Facebook.
She says a Memorial Service will follow at ten Saturday morning at the Band Stage.
“We’re going to have water fights, kids’ games, and food trucks for the rest of the afternoon. Local fire departments have been invited to bring a water fight team, and we did that last year,” Dice said. “This time it’s a little more put together. We didn’t have a walk last year, we didn’t have a memorial service last year, we kind of just did the water fights. This year, we really want to set it in stone as an annual thing, because it’s important to remember.”
The Pana Fire Department will have their World Trade Center Display on hand which includes a piece of the World Trade Center.
